The internet and online media fills the boredom gap

Do you ever feel like you are trying to play catch-up with your life? That sometimes it doesn’t matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to put it all together?
We have no one to blame but ourselves. We flit here, there and everywhere taking care of this, hoping to have fun doing that. Working, playing, running a house, and taking care of family adds to our daily duties. We run ourselves ragged until we collapse in bed and then get up the next day and start it all over again. Filling every minute doing something becomes imperative. Heaven forbid we take 5 minutes to relax. We may become *gasp* BORED.
I know, it’s a scary thought isn’t it? Like the economy we want, or need, nay crave stimulation. Stimulation: the instinctive snaps of synapse pulsating through our body, releasing all those yummy chemicals into our bloodstream. And we know how addictive those chemicals can be. After a while it’s not enough and we need… more, more, more!
Sometimes it isn’t necessarily the physical stimulants we hunger for. More and more it’s becoming the mental stimulation we desire. After all with the millions of books that have been written and the quadrillions of words used to create them, there is a never ending pool of resources at our disposal.
That kind of stimulation takes work though. I mean you have to actually go to the bookstore or (heart skips a beat) a library. Then you have to purchase/check out the book, lug it home, open it up and read. That is a lot of work for something we may not like and usually doesn’t even have any pictures to go with it. There’s a solution to this dilemma though.
Online media and the internet!
There, with the click of a button, you can be entertained, be informed or be enthralled. Stimulation is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. No need to rush any longer. We can pull up a chair, grab our coffee and peruse at our own pace. It isn’t going anywhere. Granted, we may end up looking like a monkey discovering a stick while we hunch over our keyboards and stare mindlessly at our monitors, but so what? Boredom ceases to exist!
For those who still enjoy settling in with a book though, the internet and technological advances have created a way we still can without all the work mentioned above with Ebooks. If you miss the sound and smell of a ‘real’ book, just peruse the internet once again for downloadable MP3 pieces of recorded page turning and play in the background while burning the candle you found online that smells like ink printed paper.
Want to meet up with friends? Forget having to get dressed, drag yourself out of the house and into your car, fight traffic and wait in line for a seat at a once favorite bistro or bar to have a cup of something and a conversation with your best friend. Now all you have to do is sign into your social media site of choice and converse with your best friend there. She’s not available? No problem! There are hundreds of millions of others in those sites at any given time that would be happy to chat. They even brought their own refreshment.
Attending concerts in person is great when you can, but thanks to your sister’s boyfriend’s cousin not getting you the prime tickets he promised you missed seeing your band of choice perform last night. Not to worry, it will have been recorded and shared online to watch whenever you want. Same goes for that TV show you didn’t catch when it was on originally. Just take yourself over to the show’s website or any number of free or paid video streaming sites and enjoy at your convenience.
Now if someone out there would just invent a way for me to sleep and still be online at the same time…
